When it comes to choosing or shopping for fishing rods, follow these simple guidelines.

The first thing when determining the right rod is knowing what kind of fishing you’re planning on doing. Keep in mind there is a wide array of fishing rods from which to choose, all designed for a specific purpose. Fishing rods come in a variety of lengths and style and it’s wise to factor in things like, whether or not you’ll be inside a boat, the type of species you’ll be going after and how often.Visit tacklebox for great selection on rods.

Fishing  rods for freshwater fishing should typically be around 5.5 to 6.5 feet long and capable of casting 1/4-ounce to 3/8- or 1/2-ounce lures and baits. The most popular types of fishing rods are steel and graphite, if you go with graphite, one thing to consider is the amount of stiffness or modulus. Typically for graphite high modulus fishing rods are best. Look for a high-modulus model (IM-8 or IM-10). Fishing rods with higher modulus of elasticity, has more stiffness per ounce of rod weight which means these fishing rods are stiffer, stronger and cast more accurately.

When going after soft nibbling fish, fishing rods with cork handles may be the way to go. The cork handle allows the most sensitivity. Keep in mind that over time cork can show wear and begin to chip. Rods with foam handles are a good alternative to cork handles.

Fishing rods with rod blanks in the handle will add an extra measure of sensitivity. Handles with a split grip that expose part of the blank will have even more sensitivity.
