When it comes to fishing lures, you don’t want to spend half your trip trying to find the right one for the job. But with so many fishing lures to choose from, what is the best way to determine which is the best to use? Species of fish, time of year, the waters you are fishing, even the weather, all play a role in choosing the best type of fishing lures to use.

Whether you are starting out, or an avid angler, the following is a breakdown of some of the more basic fishing lures to have in your tackle box.

Jerk Bait. Jerk baits are fishing lures that have no movement on their own. The action comes from the angler using a jerking motion which brings the lure to life. The appeal for fish is the jerking motion of the lure mimics a wounded fish or worm.

Spoons. Spoons may be one of the best fishing lures to use for the beginner. It’s simple design is surpassed by it’s method of use. You basically cast and reel. Spoons make a wobbling motion which is attractive to fish.

Surface Lures. Surface fishing lures work on top of the water. In my opinion, these type lures are a blast to use because the fish explodes up out of the water in order to hit the bait. If you’re fishing an area that has a lot of weeds, this should be among your first choice of fishing lures because they are less likely to become tangled.

Standard casting lures. Standard casting lures are fishing lures that can be used to catch a large range of fish, They are easy to work and simply varying the speed in which you retrieve determines which approach works best. Often times you’ll catch different species depending upon how fast you retrieve. These fishing lures range from about 1/16 of an ounce to 3 ounces and are typically used for lightweight species.

Soft Baits. Soft Baits are lures that are made of rubber and they commonly resemble a long worm or frog. Typically these are used with a weighted jig head and retreat slowly or in a jerky motion. Soft baits are among the best fishing lures to use when going for a big catch.
